For some candidates in our network, this may be the first time you have considered working flexibly and the transition can be a challenge. If you are thinking of making a change to your work pattern, here are some considerations:

  • How much time are you prepared to give? Most challenging positions will require at least three days per week in the office, with a day or two from home. Some clients will ask candidates to start full time for a short period to understand the culture and the requirements of the position, and we recommend that you think positively about this option.
  • Do you have a quiet, dedicated space when you are working from home for part of the week, where you can focus on the job in hand? Many parents of young children are happy to continue working once the kids are asleep and peace descends on the household but it helps if you have your own home office.
  • Agree the parameters of flexibility with your employer, and ensure you are confident that you can achieve their expectations within the time you have available.  If you believe that the opportunity is a full time commitment squeezed into reduced working hours, be open and clear that this will not work.
  • Be contactable outside the agreed working hours but don’t be taken advantage of. If there is an important meeting, try your best to alter your home schedule to attend.  If you do have young children, flexible childcare is a must.
  • Consider the impact that your flexibility has on others in the team. Make sure that they feel directed where appropriate and that you are contactable to help make difficult decisions.  Flexibility can be great for junior members of the team to take on extra responsibility but make sure that they feel nurtured and properly managed.
  • When a flexible professional is working their minds are totally directed towards the job in hand. Flexibility allows you to do the “stuff” in your life like arranging holidays and paying insurance bills in your own time rather than at the office, which is a major benefit to clients.
  • Be aware that the client is getting a great deal; the likelihood is that whilst they will be paying for 75% of your time, they will get 100% of your commitment and brainpower.
